Bayard Cutting Arboretum
440 Montauk Highway, Great River, NY
Details: Tuesday-Sunday, 9-5. $8 parking fee. Visit the Hidden Oak Cafe offering a varied menu of freshly prepared foods, open 11-3:30.
Connetquot River State Park Preserve
505 Oakdale Avenue, Oakdale, NY
Details: Connetquot River State Park Preserve maintains 3,473 acres of land and water for the protection and propagation of game birds, fish and animals. The preserve also has 50 miles of hiking, bridle, cross-country ski and nature trails, as well as freshwater fly fishing (by permit only) on the Connetquot River.
Hecksher State Park
Hecksher Parkway, East Islip, NY
Details: The 1,600 acres of Heckscher State Park on the south shore of Long Island are used by park visitors for a number of outdoor activities. Four miles of paved, multi-use trails attract bicycle riders, walkers, and nature lovers. In addition to stunning views of the Great South Bay with Fire Island as the backdrop, visitors see whitetail deer, a variety of birds and other wildlife.

Details: The Islip Grange is a restoration village that is the site of many historic buildings and landmarks. The Historic Sayville Firehouse, Windmill, a scale model of the Dutch Reform Church, the Robinson Cottage, Ockers’ Barn, Tuthill-Case House and Percy Williams Cottage all dwell on this sprawling 12 acres. Charming and quaint, the Dutch Reform Church is available for rent and is often used for weddings, lectures and photo sessions.
